Typographic installation by Tina Ackermann

Las caleñas son como las florez que vestidas van de mil colores

This typographic installation is a three metre long visualisation in thread and clag of the daily Sonido! soundtrack. Like all our music at the cafe, this version, by Columbian Salsa band Fruko y sus Tesos, is played on original vinyl records brought from South America. Another version by The Latin Brothers, can be seen under the Musica section of the website.

Narcotrópico

Starts: March 10, 2011

Prints by Juan Obando

This exhibition features a series of black and white silkscreen prints, which include pieces from my most recent work, exhibited at Salón Nacional de Artistas in Colombia, tied together under the concept of ‘Narcotrópico’. Lately, I have been developing a body of work that exemplifies what I call ‘narcoaesthetics’, a language heavily influenced by the imaginary of South America and the tension between its image as a tropical paradise and the reality of a narco-economy. A high-contrast aesthetic of excess and a taste for tacky neoclassicism in an ‘underdeveloped’, precarious, tropical (touristic) context. Between Tropical and Gothic, these images present themselves as reminders of fiction becoming reality.

Starts: Jan 22nd, 2011

Photographs by Drew Echberg

I consider myself a documentary photographer. My aim is to create a body of work made up of instances of the peculiar, beautiful, ugly and humorous. My work often focuses on the character of built environments and of the marks that we leave on the landscape. The strange objects that we create reflect the strange nature of our society. While man-made ugliness can be quite depressing, I do find a lot of humour and joy in the ugliness of our world and try to depict this in my photography in order to share it with others – sometimes all we can do is laugh. These photographs were taken in Uruguay.

Photographs by Erin Lee

These images highlight the ways in which people across one continent can lead very different lives. In them, we see people in crowded, bustling cities such as Buenos Aires, La Paz or Bogotá compared to the way people still lead a life of traditions in the rural areas. What struck me about the people I met there is that they always make the most of what they have and need no excuse to celebrate life.

Starts: Nov 6th, 2010

Photographs by Nicole Davis

The Feria de St Telmo is a vibrant street market that comes to life every Sunday in St Telmo, a bohemian inner city barrio of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here both locals and visitors come together once a week, taking over the streets in a riot of colour and music.
These images document a typical market day by observing some of the characters who are at the feria every week: antique dealers, musicians, stallholders, artists, dancers, restaurant staff and roving advertisers for the businesses surrounding the market. They are integral to the life of the feria and seem somehow to belong to these streets.
The visitors to the feria, most of whom are tourists, are also essential participants. There for only a short few short hours, they usually leave never to return, except through the memories that they have captured in their photographs.
